The Great Open Speeches_By Ward Connely 1990
Author: The author is relatively unknown to us, but the author according to the things that she wrote and drew, she was either a politician, a journalist, or a funny political figure. This picture was based on Martin Luther.
Audience: The intended audience that the author wanted to portray this image to was probably for people who are studying the civil rights movement, or maybe even for very elderly audiences.
Subject/Purpose: I believe that the intended purpose for the audience is to show how Martin Luther King Jr. used very detailed and attention getting words to capture the hearts of the audience. Martin appears to be talking in a very peaceful way. The other person, who could very well be Malcolm X, is possibly using very strong and harsh words to portray his frustration. He was most likely talking about using force with weapons to win the Civil Rights Movement, and according to the audience watching, people seem to think that it is not a good idea at all.
Context: The political cartoon is portraying two historical figures. Person on the right is Martin Luther King Jr., and the figure on the right is most likely Malcolm X. The cartoon is showing the difference between both of their public speaking methods. Martin Luther King Jr. seems to be drawing in audiences attention, and getting them all happy and excited by using nice speaking skills. He is talking about solving peace with peace, while the person on the right, Malcolm X, appears to be portraying that he wants to solve peace with violence. Because of that, people seem to be eerie, because they most likely are either sick of violence, or they feel that it may just make matters worse than they already are.
